    Means of using abbreviations in specialised texts [Articol]

    This article explores the use of abbreviations in the specialised text, namely in the field of education, and highlights the importance of their proper introduction to avoid the reader’s confusion. Abbreviations play a vital role in improving readability, conciseness, and comprehension in the technical context besides getting readers’ attention and easing the process of writing. The study focuses on the benefits of using abbreviations such as acronyms and initialisms to shorten complex terms and the need to decode abbreviations upon their first use, especially for less common terms, considering the potential challenges faced by the non-native readers and those from different fields. Various approaches to introducing abbreviations are presented, advocating for methods that prioritize precision and the reader’s understanding over strict adherence to rules. Ultimately, the correct and strategic use of abbreviations can significantly enhance the effectiveness of the technical communication by promoting clarity, avoiding repetition, saving space, and increasing the reader’s engagement.

    Translating similes: a comparative perspective on Romanian versions of the novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carrol [Articol]

    Articolul își propune să sublinieze rolul comparației în textele literare ca un instrument stilistic puternic, ce sporește imaginea, profunzimea emoțională și semnificația textului. Sunt prezentate diferite funcții ale comparației, inclusiv capacitatea acesteia de a crea impresii vizuale vii pentru o înțelegere mai clară a mesajului și de a evoca o rezonanță emoțională mai pronunțată la cititori. Diferite tipuri de comparații, precum comparațiile explicite/implicite, scurte/extinse, autentice/banale contribuie în mod unic la stilul și tonul narativ al textului. De asemenea, lucrarea examinează provocările întâlnite în redarea comparațiilor în procesul traducerii, axându-se în special pe dificultățile întâmpinate de traducător atunci când sunt transferate din limba engleză în limba română și oferind strategii pentru redarea eficientă a acestora în traducere. Analiza comparativă a două versiuni de traducere a acestei figuri de stil relevă complexitatea redării, importanța păstrării capacității stilistice și emoționale ale acesteia, subliniind, în același timp, relevanța sensibilității culturale și a creativității lingvistice în procesul de traducere.

    PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT THROUGH INDIVIDUALISED APPROACH TO LEARNING

    The article focuses on the learners’ personality traits that evolve throughout their lives. Changes in personality are typically accompanied by individual differences, implying that people differ in the development patterns as they move through adulthood. Usually when we talk about someone’s personality, we mean the features that make that person different from the other people, perhaps even unique. This aspect of personality is called individual differences. The defining characteristics of a person is that of being not only a product of natural biological evolution, but primarily of a social and cultural shaping of the personality. There are many internal and external factors that influence the personality traits, but it is the differentiated and individualised approaches to learning that facilitate improvement and development of talents and potentials, enhancing a better quality of life, achievement of dreams and aspirations.

    DEPICTING THE CHARACTER’S TRAITS IN THE ARTISTIC DIALOGUE

    Articolul se axează pe analiza particularităților dialogului ca tehnică narativă în ficțiune și rolul acestuia în crearea imaginii personajului literar (trăsături de caracter, pasiuni, obiceiuri, stare emoțională) prin mijloace lingvistice explicite și implicite. Imaginea personajului în dialog în proza modernă poate fi dezvăluită printr-o gamă destul de largă de mijloace lingvistice: epitet, metaforă, comparație, hiperbolă, joc de cuvinte, ironie și sarcasm, proverbe, zicători.Unele mijloace lexico-frazeologice și stilistice care descriu personajele necesită cunoștințe extralingvistice pentru a fi interpretate (aluzie, nume de locuri, referiri la date ale unor evenimente istorice, nume de oameni celebri, nume de cărți, teatre etc.) din partea cititorilor.

    THE ROLE OF DIALOGUE IN LITERARY IMAGE CREATION

    One of the main characteristics of a literary text is its absolute anthropocentric character, consisting in the fact that the main image subject is a human being, i.e. the character in any literary work. Nowadays the issues of dialogue speech have intensive development as the communicative function of language is the most organically expressed in the dialogue and naturally appears in the process of dialogical interaction of people. The article focuses on the peculiarities of the dialogue as a particular compositional form of fiction and its role in creating the character image (gender, age, national, racial, local and temporal characteristics, social status) through explicit and implicit linguistic means. Description of character traits, names of women and men, age, nationality, profession, education, social status are explicit means by which the character image is created. Among the implicit means there are functionally coloured words in the characters’ speech, jargon, dialect and means that require the additional background knowledge to interpret them (allusion, place names, references to dates of historical events, names of famous people, names of books, theaters, etc.) on behalf of readers.
