Abstract

The double negation, in a written text, is not equivalent to that of logic. It supposes complicated and sometimes opaque forms for the translator. In classical logic, the double negation always refers to the whole sentence; at the same time, in a natural language it can refer to both the whole sentence and one of its component parts. And if the intention of the translator or of the publisher is to produce a «favorable» version of the translated text, from the pragmasemantic point of view, in the source language, then the negation is perceived more logically, resorting to suppressions and paraphrases, in the broadest sense. Or, in the first part of his life, Emil Cioran produces texts that descend from a vox clamantis in deserto, the mark of a rebellious and cynical spirit, follower of inconsolation and despair. The spiritual adventure of late modernity did not seem exactly ideal for him; he wanted “a country with the history of France and the population of China”. The French publishing houses, therefore, strived to cultivate a pragmasemantics of tolerance, creating, in the eyes of the French public, the image of a „wise” Cioran, as they perceived him in his essays written in Moliere's language, in the second part of his life.
