Item Evaluation of Zeuzera pyrina infestation in walnut orchards and proposal of an alternative ecological control method [Articol](Editura USM, 2025) Fron, Arcadie; Batco, MihailThe study assessed the impact of the xylophagous pest Zeuzera pyrina on walnut orchards in the central region of the Republic of Moldova, providing a detailed phenological and ecological profile. Monitoring of adult populations revealed an active flight period between May and August, correlated with temperatures above 25°C. Field data indicated an average infestation rate of 24.4% among the analyzed trees, with 58.1% of their branches being affected. The larvae produce galleries up to 50 cm in length, causing significant structural damage. An unusually high trophic plasticity was observed, with larvae also feeding on foliage under limiting conditions. Given the difficulty of applying contact insecticides, the study proposes an innovative ecological control method: detection of larvae using acoustic sensors and injection of a biologically active substance. This approach offers ecological, selective advantages and is compatible with modern technologies, representing a viable solution for sustainable pest management and the preservation of walnut orchard health.Item Modul de atac al Zeuzera pyrina și impactul său devastator asupra pomilor din livezi(CEP USM, 2024) Fron, ArcadieThe walnut orchard industry in the Republic of Moldova faces significant threats from the pest Zeuzera pyrina, which can drastically reduce crop yield and quality. This study investigates the monitoring and management of this pest in a 1.5 hectare walnut orchard, analyzing its impact on tree health and developing effective control methods. Population monitoring was conducted using pheromone traps and visual inspections, revealing significant fluctuations influenced by weather conditions. Z. pyrina poses a considerable risk by damaging the tree structure. The study emphasizes the necessity of integrated pest management, combining biological and chemical methods to mitigate infestations. Future research should focus on developing localized control strategies and fostering collaboration between researchers, farmers, and authorities to ensure the sustainability and productivity of walnut crops.Item ZEUZERA PYRINA: THE THREATENING LEOPARD MOTH DAMAGING FRUIT TREES(CEP USM, 2023) Fron, ArcadieThis article provides a comprehensive overview of Z. pyrina, including its life cycle, behavior, impact on fruit tree health, and management strategies. Through a thorough review of credible sources and scientific research, this article highlights the destructive nature of Z. pyrina larvae, which burrow into the wood, disrupting the flow of water and nutrients and weakening the tree's structure. The article emphasizes the importance of early detection, cultural practices, biological control, and judicious use of chemicals in managing Z. pyrina infestations. By presenting a concise summary of relevant information, this article aims to enhance understanding and support effective strategies for combating the detrimental effects of Z. pyrina on fruit tree cultivation.
