Abstract

Imagery is a crucial part of poetry, and Japanese poetry is not an exception. In this study there is an attempt to analyse a series of haiku (Japanese poems), and their translations into Romanian, French, English and Russian languages. The goal of this paper is to discover translation strategies most used in translating Japanese haiku, some of the main difficulties of this process and solutions, through comparison and an analytical method. A corpus was created, consisting of 4 haiku and all the translated versions. They were compared from the point of view of structure and semantics, as well as the elements of the imagery of nature that emphasise autumn were described and concisely analysed. One of the final thoughts is that there are more solutions when it comes to poetry, either keeping the original emotions and imagery, or concentrating on the form and readers understanding. As long as the literary work shares the same message, the translator may come up with creative solutions.
