The development of fan-generated translations: the case of fansubbing (based on the English and Russian material)

This paper explores fan-generated translations, specifically fansubbing, in English and Russian materials. It compares professional subtitling and amateur fansubbing practices using the case study of “Star Trek: Into Darkness”. The research highlights the historical evolution of audiovisual translation, the non-professional translation practices, and the impact of fansubbing on traditional methodologies. It also discusses the ethical and legal issues surrounding fansubbing, its role in shaping media accessibility, the cross-cultural exchange, and the challenges faced by fansubbers in preserving cultural nuances.
