Abstract
Ambiguity is a recurring challenge in translation, requiring the translator to navigate multiple possible interpretations of a text. This article explores the crucial role of context in resolving linguistic ambiguities and ensuring accurate meaning transfer between languages. Contextual elements - ranging from lexical, syntactic, and pragmatic factors to cultural and situational cues - act as guiding tools that help translators clarify meaning and reduce uncertainty. The study examines different types of ambiguities (lexical, syntactic, and pragmatic) and illustrates how context aids in their resolution through concrete examples. Special attention is given to the role of extra linguistic context, including cultural references, speaker intent, and discourse conventions, which significantly influence translation choices. Furthermore, the article highlights the cognitive processes involved in interpreting ambiguous structures and discusses strategies translators use to achieve clarity, such as explicitation, reformulation, and disambiguation techniques. The findings underscore the necessity of a deep contextual understanding to produce accurate and coherent translations. By demonstrating the interplay between ambiguity and context, this research contributes to a broader understanding of translation as an interpretative act. It reinforces the idea that mastering contextual analysis is essential for translators to navigate linguistic complexities effectively.
