Abstract
The article analyzes the European Union's contribution to maintaining peace and security in
Europe and globally, based on the applicable normative acts, such as the Treaty on European Union, the
Lisbon Treaty, the EU Global Strategy for Foreign and Security Policy, and the EU Strategic Compass.
To characterize the EU's role as an international actor, the Union's relations with the UN, NATO, and
partner states, including the EU's defense capabilities, were outlined. Vulnerabilities and threats to
global peace and security were described during the Covid-19 pandemic and the military invasion of
Ukraine by Russia. Given that sanctions are among the primary instruments of the EU's common
foreign and security policy, the variety and context of their adoption were analyzed. The capacity for
conflict prevention, peace promotion, and international security consolidation was examined through
the description of objectives and budgets of the European Defense Fund and the European Peace
Instrument. The circumstances created by Russia's military invasion of Ukraine necessitated
highlighting traditional and hybrid threats to the EU's peace and security, including at the global level.
The role of the EU in defending the peace and security of the Republic of Moldova was reflected in the
description of the European Peace Instrument.
