Abstract
The relevant novel of Stendhal "Red and Black" highlights a trend called "beylisms", by which the central character, Julien Sorel, assumes, to some extent, the characteristics of Stendhal personality.Situated at the limit between Romanticism and Realism, this one represents a controversial hero, on the one hand being endowed with exceptional qualities such as intelligence, beauty, tenacity, will and healthy ambition, and on the other hand being dominated by a profound hatred against his contemporaries. Victim of a fatal chromatic combination (red symbolizing the military career, and black – the ecclesiastic one), Sorel plans by himself his death.
