Item PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT THROUGH ACTION RESEARCH(Editura USM, 2024) Creanga, OxanaProfessional development through action research design is a method used by educators to improve teaching practices and enhance learning outcomes. It involves a cyclical process of identifying a problem or area for improvement, developing a plan of action, implementing interventions, collecting and analysing data, reflecting on the outcomes, and making adjustments based on findings. The present study defines action research, identifies areas to use it, assesses the key characteristics of it, and advances the steps in conducting and evaluating the design. Professional development through action research helps educators to take an active role in improving their teaching practice and fostering student success. It encourages a reflective and evidence-based approach to professional growth, ultimately leading to more effective teaching and enhanced learning experiences for students.Item FIGURAL NARRATIVE SITUATION IN FLASH FICTION(Editura USM, 2024) Creanga, OxanaThe present essay explores figural narrative situation in contemporary flash fiction. Drawing on the analytical framework of narrative typology proposed by Franz K. Stanzel, and redefined by Manfred Jahn, which includes the first-person narrative, authorial narrative, and figural narrative, each characterized by specific features of involvement, distance, access to knowledge, voice, narrative perspective or focalization, etc., the essay investigates the underlying linguistic features and narrative techniques of actualization of the figural narrative situation. By delineating the specific narrative categories and rhetorical means in the flash story “Before/After” by M. McCluskey, the undertaken analysis aims to determine the innovative constituting principles of the figural narrative type in contemporary fictional prose, both at the discourse and story levels. Item COHERENCE IN LITERARY NARRATIVES(CEP USM, 2016-03-12) Creanga, OxanaCoherence, as a basic standard of textuality, is achieved by text linguistic factors and compositional patterns. Drawing on an interdisciplinary approach that combines text linguistics, cognitive and narrative concerns, the article reviews the principles of text coherence, i.e. the standards of time, causality, thematic unity and continuity, and focuses on literary narratives characterized by various degrees of coherence. It explores the impact of narrative aspects and categories, such as temporal organization, frequency and plot completeness on the reader’s mental contribution in perceiving local and global coherence in the course of interpreting texts. Further exploiting the challenges to text coherence, it argues that establishing unity in literary texts relies on the receiver’s background knowledge, his or her ability to draw inferences, fill in ellipsis and retrieve contextually relevant information.Item SOLVING TEXTUAL INCONSISTENCIES: A CASE STUDY OF COHERENCE IN THE SHORT STORY “CLAP HANDS, HERE COMES CHARLIE” BY BERYL BAINBRIDGE(CEP USM, 2023) Creanga, OxanaThe present article deals with the concept of coherence as a pragmatically determined quality of text production and reception. It presents the analysis of coherence manifestation in the short story “Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie” by B. Bainbridge focusing on the structural and discoursal elements that preclude the unity of the narrative. It considers the peculiarities of the etic opening, the interference of the main line and subsidiary lines of the narrative, and the dramatic irony and their impact on the linear development of the narrative. In addition, the manifestations of different forms of discourse which function as markers of distinct narratorial or character viewpoints are commented on with a view to determining the reader’s degree of interpretative cooperation in completing the blanks and solving the indeterminacies.Item PRESENTATIONAL MODES IN LITERARY NARRATIVES(CEP USM, 2020) Creanga, OxanaItem THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THEMATIC AND INFORMATION STRUCTURES IN ENGLISH LITERARY TEXTS(CEP USM, 2021) Creanga, OxanaThe article addresses the topic of thematic and information structures of the message in the English literary texts and the effect these arrangements have upon the reader in the cognitive and aesthetic processes of text reception. The study draws on the mechanisms that explain how the sequencing of elements in the clause contribute to the flow of information and topic development in a paragraph as a unit of text analysis. It also analyzes various patterns of thematic and information structures and seeks to evaluate the function of marked and unmarked structures of the author’s thematic choice in a number of literary excerpts with a view to identifying the pragmatic effect of these arrangement patterns in English literary fiction.Item MEDIATION IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING(CEP USM, 2020) Creanga, OxanaThe present paper approaches the concept of mediation in the context of teaching English as a foreign language. Drawing on the analysis of this language activity treated by notorious authors, such as Maria Stathopoulou, Brian North, and Enrica Piccardo, it focuses on a broader view of mediation presented in CEFR(2001) and subsequently developed in CEFR Companion Volume with New Descriptors (2018). The article pursues to determine the improvements brought to this concept, the new illustrat ive descriptor scales alongside the mediation strategies with a view to devising specific mediation tasks correlated with the three macro - groups of mediation activities: mediating texts, mediating concepts, and mediating communication aimed at developing l earners’ mediation skills.Item COHESION IN LITERARY NARRATIVES(CEP USM, 2020) Creanga, OxanaCohesion, one of the main standards of textuality advanced by Robert de Beaugrande and Wolfgang U. Dressler, is treated in the present article as a constitutive principle of textual organization. The study aims at identifying the role of cohesive categories, i.e. reference, substitution, ellipsis, junction, and lexical cohesion to the thematic organization and logical structuring of literary narratives. Analyzing the actual manifestation of lexical and grammatical cohesion elements in specific narrative contexts, the article seeks to identify the cohesive devices that enhance or preclude the logical, coherent concatenation of a given literary text with a view to evaluating their impact on the general understanding and interpretation of the narrative.
