| dc.description.abstract | The most frequent threats perceived „very often” and „often” by journalists from the Republic of Moldova (RM) and Romania (R) are „demeaning or hatful speech” (RM: 13.8%; R: 10.4%), „public discrediting” (RM: 10.5%; R: 8.7%) and „surveillance” (RM: 6.2%; R: 10.1%), shows the data of „The Worlds of Journalism Study 2021 - 2023” research that was conducted between October 2022 and September 2023 as a standard questionnaire applied to 307 journalists from the Republic of Moldova and 365 from Romania. Journalists with top management role in both countries are less exposed, generally almost twice less, than journalists without a management role. Female journalists in the Republic of Moldova are threatened more often, over two and a half times, than male journalists, in Romania the situation is the opposite, with perceived threats being greater or equal in the case of male journalists versus female journalists. Also, journalists with higher education and those with formal education or training in journalism in both countries report threats in higher proportions than those who only finished high school or without training in journalism. In both countries, the private/commercial media and, strictly in the case of the Republic of Moldova, also the non-profit media, are significantly more often victims of threats than the public service media. The study’s conclusions indicate an alarming level of threats against journalists and, in addition, to freedom of expression in both countries. | en |
