Abstract

Explicarea originii și căilor de evoluție a unui cuvânt constituie o problemă din cele mai dificile, dar în transformările lexicului unei limbi, în istoria cuvintelor, se reflectă istoria societății, a poporului care vorbește limba dată. Așadar, etimologia, ca ramură a lingvisticii care studiază originea cuvintelor, constată și contactele cu alte popoare, și influențele dintre limbi. Etimologia populară (falsa etimologie) este fenomenul de apropiere semantică și fonetică, de modificare a formei unui cuvânt împrumutat sub influența unui cuvânt mai cunoscut cu care are asemănări de formă (rareori de sens). Etimologia populară a fost considerată ca o reacție împotriva caracterului nemotivat al semnului lingvistic. Etimologia populară are un rol important la formarea numirilor de plante și insecte.

So, etymology, as a branch of linguistics that studies the oridin of words, also ascertains the contacts with other peoples, and the influences between languages. Popular etymology (false etymology) is the phenomenon of semantic and phonetic approximation, of changing the form of a borrowed word under the influence of a better-know word with wich it has similarities in form (rarely in meaning). Popular etymology was considered as a reaction against the unmotivated character of the linguistic sign. Popular etymology plays an important role in the formation of plant and insect names.
