dc.description.abstract | Euphemism is a complex linguistic tool that sums up in its structure linguistic, pragmatic, and cognitive aspects, and is used to mitigate potentially offensive effects aiming to maintain harmony and avoid the situation that would threaten respect and goodwill. Therewith, knowing the true euphemistic connotation is essential in decoding and perceiving the message itself, while the classification of euphemisms contributes to a better understanding of this connotation. The fundamental problem of classifying euphemisms normally lies in choosing the criteria for approaching the typology of euphemisms. Nowadays, the sphere of linguistic research offers a large variety of classifications of euphemisms, which is explained based on the purpose pursued and the basic criterion of the elaboration of this typology. To face this challenge it is necessary to admit that within each variant of classification of euphemisms can be accepted other sub-classifications (semantic, structural, functional, mixt, etc.) and promoted in the synthesis of the classification of euphemisms. | en |
