Abstract

Given current technological developments, economic competitiveness fundamentally relies on digitalisation, which represents a key factor in the process of industrial development. Against this background, the EU has adopted policies to support the digitalisation of industry across the entire internal market, encouraging Member States to develop national digital strategies. This paper aims to assess Romania’s progress in this area through a comparative analysis with other Central and Eastern European countries. The analysis draws on the Digital Economy and Society Index reports published by the European Commission, which serve as a key instrument for monitoring the digital advancement of EU Member States. The main finding of our research is that, despite notable progress since joining the EU, Romania must continue to invest substantially in digital skills and IT infrastructure in order to maintain its upward trajectory.
