Abstract
This article is an analysis of the French translation procedures of phraseological units excerpted from the folk tales The White Moor and The Little Purse with two Half-pennies written by Ion Creanga and of the translation difficulties posed by these units. Phraseological units play a very important role in the communicative process of fictional characters. The problem of translating phraseological units is to be able to understand them in the source language and to find their equivalents in the target language. Even though French and Romanian have related features that manifest a universal dimension (defined by linguists as universal phraseologies), translating phraseological units remains a complex problem. The translation difficulties posed by fixed word combinations concern the transfer of meaning and expressive valences. Thus, the greatest difficulty is not the words or phrases for which there is no suitable equivalent, but the realities to which they refer. Therefore, this study will show the valid translation way to find equivalents to phraseological units by applying different translation techniques, taking into account the formal, semantic, stylistic, cultural and functional peculiarities of the phraseological universe.
