Abstract
Interwar electoral Bessarabia. On Parties and votes in Eastern Greater Romania. Despite the promises of 1918, the province of Bessarabia was permanently disadvantaged in terms of representation in the Greater Romania Parliament. The 1930s are associated, in Romania in general, and in Bessarabia in particular, with the rise of right-wing extremism. This happened as a result of an intense propaganda against the background of a state of dissatisfaction, generating anti-system movements. It was noted that “precisely by virtue of its specific political, ethnic and cultural character, Bessarabia seemed to have all the features to become the ideal space for the consolidation of the Romanian national right”, becoming “the political laboratory of the new Romanian extremist right” (Alberto Basciani). There are many nuances to consider. We may wonder if chronic underrepresentation was at least a contributing factor to this phenomenon.
