Abstract

Purpose of the article: This study analyzes the natural capital assessments of pilot applications conducted with in the TEEBAgriFood for Business Project (2020–2023), implemented by the Capitals Coalition to help agrifood companies integrate natural, social, and human capitals into decision-making processes. Methodology: The analysis was based on project reports and the Capitals Coalition’s four-stage framework Frame, Scope, Measure & Value, and Apply-which guided pilot organizations in identifying key risks, dependencies, and opportunities related to natural capital. Conclusions: Pilot organizations assessed elements such as water use, greenhouse gas emissions, soil health, resource efficiency, and ecosystem condition. Key outcomes included Arvind’s 49% reduction in ecosystem harm, Olam Agri’s decreases in methane emissions and water use, Go4Fresh’s 10% food loss reduction, and Shengmu Organic Milk’s measurable benefits for nature and communities. Originality: The study underscores the importance of standardized indicators and transparent valuation methods for effectively integrating natural capital assessments into business decision-making.
