Abstract
2-Salicylidenehydrazono-thiazolidin-4-one (H2L) is a potential chelate ligand with a hybrid structure, consisting of a heterocyclic substructure and another of Schiff base, represented by an aromatic hydrazone. The interaction of H2L with different copper(II) salts was studied as a function of solvent and temperature. Regardless of the solvent, temperature and nature of the Cu(II) salt, a compound with the composition [Cu‧H2O] is obtained with a good yields, in some cases up to 88 %. At the same time, the anions from the copper salts are not part of the coordination compound in contrast to parent thiosemicarbazone complexes. From the DMSO solution, single crystals of the monohydrate compound were obtained for the X-ray study. The X-ray study (R=4.68%, 6596 reflections) revealed that the Cu(II) ion is square-planar tetracoordinated by the tridentate, double deprotonated organic ligand, and a water molecule. The L-2 ligand coordinates via the O-phenolato, N-azomethinic and N-heterocyclic-deprotonated donor atoms, thus the two adjacent 6- and 5-membered chelate ring being formated. Spontaneous double deprotonation on coordination in neutral media of H2L represents a sharp contrast to the parent thio- and isothiosemicarbazones.
