Abstract

This study addresses a topic that has been relatively underexplored in specialized historiography, focusing on the development of the agricultural sector in interwar Bessarabia. The research emphasizes the measures undertaken by the Romanian state to provide the region between the Prut and Dniester rivers with qualified personnel in the field of agronomy. One of the main objectives was to identify concrete examples supporting the hypothesis that Bessarabia was a priority for the Romanian authorities immediately after the 1918 Union. An important direction of this endeavor consisted in analyzing the professional trajectories of four Bessarabian agronomists who pursued their studies at higher education institutions in France: Montpellier, Grignon, Versailles, and Nancy. By applying the comparative method, it was possible to outline an overall picture of the state of agricultural education in the Old Kingdom and Transylvania, in comparison with that in Bessarabia. Additionally, the analysis of official legal documents, carried out through the empirical method, enabled the development of detailed biographies of the agronomists under study.
