Abstract

Seen as an alternative to the death penalty, life imprisonment is the most serious sanction a court can impose on a defendant. The principle of gender equality is the clearest indicator of equality in society, reflecting the social and legal reality of a state. Since the adoption of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Moldova in 2002, several amendments and additions have been made to meet the needs of society. However, art. 71, which regulates life imprisonment, was not modified until 2024. In this article, I will make an analysis of the changes that have arrived with the entry into force of Law No. 136 of 06-06-2024 for the amendment of some normative acts (amendment of the Criminal Code and the Contravention Code) on art. 71 of the Criminal Code, which stipulates what constitutes life imprisonment and the category of crimes for which a person can be convicted.
