Abstract

In the Republic of Moldova, 1 out of 3 journalists (33.6%) believe that media owners are extremely and very influential towards their work, when, in Romania, 1 out of 4 journalists (25.4%) consider the same, shows the data of “The Worlds of Journalism Study 2021 - 2023”. At the same time, 36.1% of Moldovan and 30% of Romanian journalists believe that business managers have the same influence. While professional ethics is extremely and very influential for 67% of Moldovan and 65.7% of Romanian journalists in relation to their professional work, editorial policy has the same type of influence for 56% of Moldovan journalists and 42.2% for Romanian ones. The study’s conclusions indicate an alarming level of impairment of journalists’ freedom of expression in the two countries which manifested itself during the COVID-19 pandemic and which could add an extra level of pressure on journalists.
