In this article the author examines the theoretical, method
ological and historiographical background of the terrorism
phenomenon research. The author, also, makes an attempt to syst
ematize the scientific literature on terrorism; theoretical
and methodological approaches of the phenomenon are also defined. The author notes that, the phenomenon of terrorism
is a multidimensional one. Terrorism is known to mankind since ancient times. For centuries it was used as illegal, but a
sharp and effective tool in a political struggle. But at the end of the 20

and at the beginning of the 21
st
century, terrorism
acquires the characteristics of an international phenomenon. Its goals and objectives, as well as its human constituent
components cross the national boundaries and cultures and become an international phenomenon.
