European Union is a product of the desire of the countries of the old continent to avoid the outbreak of another armed conflict (like the Second World War) between the historic enemies – France and Germany, creating a supranational structure based on the principles of peaceful co-operation which facilitate the economic and social-political development of his members, but which today have to cope with the disintegrationist tendencies on the continent.

Actualmente, suntem prezenți la două tendințe care se manifestă în spațiul european. Asistăm la tendințele integraționiste, dar și dezintegraționiste din spațiul european manifestate sub diferite forme–atâtla nivel comunitar (ca,de exemplu,BREXIT-ul), cât și la nivel intercomunitar, tendințe manifestate sub aspect etno-politic (Catalonia, Țara Bască, Tirolul de Sud, Corsica), economic, geopolitic și, inclusiv, politic. Toate aceste tendințe per ansamblu exercită un impact direct asupra Uniunii Europene ca entitate geopolitică. În articol atenția este focusată pe analiza tendințelor integraționiste și dezintegraționiste din spațiul european.
