Abstract

Purpose of the article: This paper presents aspects of the economics of loneliness in urban environments and highlights the paradox of urban prosperity, demonstrating how loneliness manifests itself in conditions of economic well-being. Methodology: The paper combines theoretical analysis of the concept of the economics of loneliness with empirical research based on current statistical information on household structure, living standards, migration, and access to digital technologies. The approach integrates economic, sociological, and demographic perspectives. Conclusions: The study demonstrates that urban prosperity is a compensatory mechanism for social isolation, providing the infrastructure necessary to mitigate the shortcomings of loneliness. However, urbanization, migration, and digital transformation are essential factors that produce changes in social structures and an increase in the number of solitary households. Originality: The original contribution consists of analyzing the paradox of urban prosperity and highlighting the economy of loneliness in the Republic of Moldova. The paper outlines the demographic, social, and economic picture of cities as centers of development but also of social isolation.
