Abstract
The present study presents the activity of an elite educational institution in Bessarabia between the two world wars. The Diocesan School for Girls in the second city of unified Romania harmoniously combined theoretical, practical and religious activities. The first secondary educational institution for girls in Bessarabia, established during the imperial period, was integrated into the requirements of the Romanian state. National values and Romanian identity were promoted, students visited historical provinces, deep knowledge in the field was obtained, Christian values were respected with piety. Archival, memorial sources and specialized literature develop new aspects in the educational picture of the Diocesan School led with an “iron fist” by Elena Alistar, the only woman in the Country Council who voted for the Union of Bessarabia with Romania. The analyzed material addresses the institution’s infrastructure, teaching staff, personalities, teaching and extracurricular activities.
