FOUR WOMEN TRAVELERS TO THE ROMANIAN PRINCIPALITIES BETWEEN THE YEARS 1710-1810

Abstract

Between 1710-1810, we identified travel reports from a total number of 171 travelers who visited or traversed the Romanian Principalities. Out of these reports, four of them are written by women, who turned out to be a more sensible and attentive observer. In this study, we highlight the way in which they’ve seen the Romanian world. The letters they sent home to family members or friends are important sources on the image of society and the towns of the Romanian Principalities in the 18th century. Coming from the West, accustomed to a certain standard of living, the fine ladies perceived as being a big difference between their world and the one encountered in the East.

Pentru 1710-1810, am identificat rapoarte de călătorie provenind de la un număr total de 171 de călători care au vizitat sau au traversat Principatele Române. Dintre aceste rapoarte, patru dintre ele sunt scrise de femei, care s-au dovedit a fi observatoare mai sensibile și mai atente. În acest studiu evidențiem modul în care ele văzut lumea românească. Scrisorile pe care le-au trimis acasă rudelor și prietenilor sunt surse importante cu privire la imaginea societății și a orașelor din Principatele Române în secolul al XVIII-lea. Venite din Occident, obișnuite cu un anumit standard de viață, rafinatele doamne au perceput ca fiind o mare diferență între lumea lor și cea întâlnită în Est.
