Abstract

Five wheat varieties (Triticum aestivum L.) were studied under laboratory conditions to observe the mobilization of seed reserves for seedling growth under both optimal and drought conditions. The effect of drought on seedling growth was assessed by determining the amount of reserves mobilized, depleted, and respired from seeds during germination. Under drought conditions, the highest seed reserve mobilization was observed in the cultivars Moldova 614 and Moldova 16, while respiration efficiency was higher in the Meleag cultivar compared to the others. However, it was found that in Meleag, the high loss of reserves through respiration under simulated drought conditions resulted in reduced seedling growth. The results showed that during drought, greater mobilization of seed reserves combined with minimal loss through respiration contributed to improved seedling growth in the Bijuteria Zâmbrenilor, Moldova 614 and Moldo- va 16 varieties. Therefore, efficient reserve mobilization and reduced respiratory losses during seedling growth are essential indicators of drought tolerance.
