Abstract
This study examines professional identity formation of Moldovan journalists in 2006-2023 by comparing three waves of studies (2006, 2016 and 2023). It offers a socio-demographic portrait of journalists, professional training, professional employment, and roles performed by them, and introduces structural and value changes in the journalism profession. The study reveals a shift from Soviet-trained to post-Soviet and digital-era journalists and a transformation of professional norms and self-perception. The results refer to a growing alignment with Western journalism paradigms, highlighting the importance of objectivity, social responsibility, and watchdog roles, against the background of persistent systemic difficulties. The article takes a media sociological perspective, emphasizing the interface of institutional frameworks and journalistic norms in light of evolving media environments.
