Abstract

The 17th century, the century of Romanian classicism, imparts, through personalities and values that emerge on the European scene, a distinctive note to the spiritual and literary dimension of the period, certifying/amplifying the opening of the national culture towards other spaces. Miron Costin, through his work, vividly illustrates this opening, appearing as one of its remarkable representatives. His steadfast position as a Man of the City; his writing with a broad epic scope, the kaleidoscope of knowledge/reflections/ reminiscences contained in his writings; the foreshadowing/valuation of distinct lines in the evolution of Romanian culture/literature (prose, poetry, monographic study, translations); the accession to the broad horizons of European culture/cultures, ensure him a special place in the spiritual heritage of the nation. His name (thanks to works written in Polish: Historya polskimi rytmami o Woloskiey Ziemi i Moltanskiey = Polish Chronicle; Chronica ziem moldawskch y multanskich = Polish Poem) is found in literary histories and Polish encyclopedias, thus entering the European value circuit. Modern in spirit and vision, fresh, personalized, Costin’s message traverses the centuries, offering us a living book, the reading or re-reading of which cannot be missed.
