Abstract

The paper examines the Histories of Herodotus as a manifesto of a historian’s deontological principles. The scientific and moral attitude of the “father of history” towards history are analysed in the introductory paragraph, as well as along the entire work of Herodotus. The responsibility of the historian for his opinions, the careful collecting of historical data, the stress on the moral and didactic value of the historical examples, the cross-cultural tolerance, are among the most important obligations of a historian, according to Herodotus.
