Abstract

The study explores the structure and dynamics of the Republic of Moldova’s external energy dependence, focusing on the underlying vulnerabilities that shape the country’s economic and energy security. It aims to identify the main determinants of import fluctuations and to outline strategic pathways for reducing exposure to external risks. The originality of the research stems from its integrated methodological approach, combining empirical analysis of official data sources (BNS, IEA, ANRE, Eurostat) with a conceptual examination of structural vulnerabilities within the framework of economic security theory. By addressing recent geopolitical and market developments, the paper provides a nuanced understanding of Moldova’s ongoing transition toward diversification of energy sources and gradual integration into the European energy system. The topic holds significant relevance for national economic stability and resilience, as external energy dependence continues to influence production costs, competitiveness, and the sustainability of macroeconomic growth.
