Abstract

After the defeat of the Russian Empire in the Crimean War (1853-1856), part of the territory between the Prut and the Dniester was returned to the Principality of Moldavia, following the initiative of the Austrian Foreign Minister Buol, namely southern Bessarabia. The purpose of this recession was to remove the Russian Empire from any access to the Danube. Romanian historiography has analyzed this 22-year period, the political, economic, and social transformations and the attempts of the Russian Empire to re-annex southern Bessarabia.
