The e article presents several milestones from the evolution of the MARC format development, MARC 21 particularly. Th e compatibility of various formats used in the cataloging process is addressed, which is very actual for the international library community under the aspect of information resources integration and
data exchange. The paper exposes strengthened eff orts from the university libraries of Moldova oriented towards uniform cataloging rules.
