Item State responses to counter disinformation in USA, Greece and Republic of Moldova(CEP USM, 2024) Marousis, TheofilosIn several countries, there are voices that ask for government to take steps to restrict information falseness, reduce the news that misrepresent reality and restore people’s trust in media. In USA, legislation is introduced regarding political advertisement, public’s protection from deceptive practices and audience manipulation. Greece endeavors for digital transformation across the spectrum of the public sector, which will promote to have eventually more valid and transparent information flow. The Republic of Moldova is making legislation reforms to modernize its policies and create a more stable environment that potentially brings her closer to the European reforms. In this article, we focus on public policies against disinformation in three different countries including United States, Greece and Moldova. Each state applies its own approach in order to deal with the problem.Item Exploring the intersection of misinformation and public agenda: a closer look to a looming political scandal(CEP USM, 2024) Marousis, TheofilusWhen a problem receives massive dimensions in society or affects the common good, then it is considered as a public problem. The value and usefulness of information to citizens sometimes comes to be degraded by misinformation in order to serve some purposes, as an influence tool. The efforts of powerful actors to push their agenda in the public discussion combined with information falseness emerges a possible problematic situation of agenda setting mixed with misinformation. In the article we discuss the case of Pizzagate as a conspiracy theory according to certain sources, which occupied the public debate, near the US presidential elections. We underline the risks of information falseness for public security and the need of state measures to limit the phenomenon.
