Abstract
Articolul este elaborat în cadrul implementării proiectului Jean Monnet Chair „EU’s role in the emerging international system” (EUREIS), nr. 101126798.
The European integration of the Republic of Moldova constitutes a fundamental strategic priority of the state’s foreign and domestic policy, rooted in its 1991 Declaration of Independence. Moldova’s European trajectory has evolved through key milestones, including the 1994 Partnership and Cooperation Agreement, the 2005 EU–Moldova Action Plan, active participation in the Eastern Partnership launched in 2009, and the signing of the EU–Moldova Association Agreement in 2014. The granting of candidate country status in June 2022 marked a historic turning point, reaffirming Moldova’s pro-European orientation and inaugurating a new stage in bilateral relations. This study examines the country’s progress between 2022 and 2025 in crucial areas such as justice reform, anti-corruption policies, electoral legislation, and external trade relations. Key developments include the introduction of judicial vetting mechanisms, increased high-level corruption investigations, and the adoption of a new Electoral Code in 2023. At the same time, the European Union remains Moldova’s main trading partner, accounting for 53.7% of total trade volume and 65% of exports, thus consolidating the country’s economic reorientation toward the EU market. The findings highlight that Moldova’s prospects for EU accession are closely tied to the depth and consistency of domestic reforms, the strengthening of the rule of law, and the sustained commitment to democratic values and European standards. The article has been prepared within the framework of the implementation of the Jean Monnet Chair project “EU’s Role in the Emerging International System” (EUREIS), No. 101126798.
