The development of the informational society give rise to new opportunities for learning and they challenge established views and practices regarding how teaching and learning should be organized and carried out. At the same time, globalization and the emergence of new players in the world economy have intensified competition, many countries turning production towards high value-added and knowledge-intensive products and services which request high-level skills labor force. Lifelong learning, embracing all forms of educational and learning experiences, helps individuals to engage in purposeful interactions with their environment through the development of their knowledge, skills and critical thinking abilities. It affirms that learning, as a continuous process in life, plays an essential role in enabling individuals to adapt to, and deal with, new challenges and changes in their lives and surrounding environment.

The present day economy is an economy of knowledge, with multicultural character that requires a new and different approach to learning mode, and if we want to be an active part of such economy, we have to be willing to accept the changes, adapt to them quickly, to change existing methods of learning, if we are not to be overrun, we must align to current trends by time and rapid social and economic changes . A knowledge-based society refers to the type of society that is needed to compete and succeed in the changing economic and political dynamics of the modern world. It refers to societies o therefore rely on the knowledge of their citizens to drive the innovation, entrepreneurship and dynamism of that society’s economy.

Lifelong learning has emerged as one of the major challenges for the worldwide knowledge society of the future.
KEY COMPETENCES IN THE FRAMEWORK OF COMPETENCE-BASED EDUCATION AND LIFELONG LEARNING

The article gives a brief review of competence-based education today and its underlying principles. Since today’s societies place challenging demands on individuals, they are confronted with complexity in many parts of their lives and careers. In these contexts, the competencies that individuals need to meet their goals have become more complex, requiring more than the mastery of certain narrowly defined skills. Defining such competencies can improve assessments of how well prepared young people and adults are for life’s challenges, as well as identify overarching goals for education systems and lifelong learning.

The current world is a world of global interweaving of all aspects. All social, ecological, biological, psychological, spiritual phenomena become increasingly interdependent. Under these conditions, the old paradigm has become inapplicable. The world needs a new vision of reality, which means that the way of perception itself must change. Thus, knowledge does not remain only a feature of the current economy, but becomes a principle, with a self-organizing character of society and its progress. Acquisitions of knowledge bring a greater margin of movement, of action alternatives, and freedom. To know more means to be guided by given, additional alignments, to be one step ahead.
