The fate of the English novel is traced from the era of Pre-Romanticism to the established romantic aesthetics. The typological aspects of the Gothic and historical novel are dissociated, and their comparative characteristics are given. Particular attention is paid to the contribution of the British romantics in the formation of the genre of psychological novel and its gender aspects.
